Why Byzantine Catholic?
Our History
The Romanian Greek-Catholic journey of faith and witness.
Roots and continuity
The Romanian Greek-Catholic Church belongs to the Byzantine Christian tradition. Its history is connected with the Christian East, the encounters between Eastern and Western Christianity, and the ecclesial life of Transylvania.
Attempts to restore communion
Following the growing separation between East and West, councils and church leaders pursued renewed communion. The Council of Florence in 1439 is one important milestone in that wider history.
The Romanian Church United with Rome
At the end of the seventeenth century, the union associated with the Romanian clergy in Transylvania shaped the emergence of the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church, which retained its Byzantine liturgical heritage.
Seven Blessed Martyr Bishops
Under communist persecution in Romania, seven Greek-Catholic bishops gave courageous witness to their faith. They were beatified in Blaj in 2019. Their lives remain a source of strength and inspiration.
